¿ What is that ?

Some unidentified thing thing a few yards over is making loon-like noises (quavering whistles and such). I wonder what it could be…

Yeah !
I'll have to check the bird guide but it makes a lot of sense. Owls are starting to become more common in the inner suburbs. Sometimes young mockingbirds will sing at night but only in the early summer.

At our old place, there was a flicker (woodpecker) that would sometimes call once every fifteen seconds for what seemed like the entire day !
