PopMatters is cool !

Good, in-depth writing on a wide scope of the ol' pop culture hoo-ha. Two highlights:

  • An interview with ex-dBs drummer Will Rigby, who is now drumming with Steve Earle, of all people.
  • A review of 24 Hour Party People, the new film about the rise of the Manchester scene. I am still a little surprised that a film which is in large part also the story of Factory Records ever got made, but that Tony Wilson was evidently quite a character.

Cotton Is King
I am currently listening to those boys right now ! Is good. (Listening to the songs in alphabetical title order.) I especially like it when the rhythm section gets a little spikey, then it starts sounding like half of Wire or XTC backing up John Lennon (and this is a good thing).

Re: Cotton Is King
Robert Harrison does in fact possess the voice of John Lennon. It's eerie. And cool. Each song in succession has been my favorite on that cd. Check out "Password" and "Church of Wilson."

(Er. By "that cd," I mean Kon Tiki.)

Thanks! That's a good site. (Their DJ Shadow review inspired me to finally put up my own small one, complete with MP3s.) I need to accumulate a stash of good pop-culture sites for the inevitable day Salon goes bankrupt. :-(
