Way to go Lance !

So, Mr. Armstrong has won the Tour de France for the fourth consecutive time. Even if you forget the fact that he's a cancer survivor, this is an impressive achievement, and there is no sign that he won't be able to do it for a fifth time, which would put him up there in the pantheon along with legends such as Eddie Merckx.

What I find telling is the way he wins. There were 20 stages in the Tour, but he won only a few of them. His overall performance is what counts; he trains and prepares fanatically so that he is very consistent in the mountains, where even the best riders are challenged. At the ends of these stages, even the good riders look like death warmed over, but Lance looks like he could go on for another stage. (In fact, in training, he has done the same climbs twice.) Although he didn't win a lot of mountain stages outright, you get the feeling as you watch him that he could blow away the rest of the field any time he wanted.

Mr. Armstrong will also be appearing in the New York City Championships on Sunday, and we might be visiting friends there, so maybe I'll actually get to see the man !
