Nice Going, Memorex

Actually, I like Memorex recordable CD media, but somebody was not thinking when they were figuring out how to package their “Cool Colors” pocket (3") CD-Rs with matching slim jewel cases. The media side, which needs to be kept absolutely pristine before writing, is facing into the case, so:
  1. A little vortex of potentially dust-laden air can be summoned as you open up the jewel case.
  2. It's a little challenging to pry the disc away from the case without getting your fingers on the surface, because you're trying to pull in the same direction that is the side of the disc you're trying not to touch !
As it turns out, the disc I just burned verified successfully, but I am afraid it's always going to be a little touch and go with these things...

Haha, my bf complained about the very same thing! You men are too much, with your plastic covers and Jerry Seinfeld-ish neat freak behaviors!

Oh, the neat freakishness is very selective
Hair-laden dust bunnies in the corner are OK, but I cannot stand it when people pile larger books/magazines on top of smaller ones. Gets my dander up it does.

Can't stop progress
In 1990, I was working on a CD-ROM based product for PCs and Macs, and I think the burner (or mastering device ?) was so expensive that we actually had to bring the data to another building or lab to get it done. By 1995 you could get one for about $1,000, I think, but it had a 1x write speed.

Now I've got three in the house -- one I actually bought on purpose, one on a work ThinkPad that I didn't notice until I looked closely at the drive door, and one on the iBook we just got as an opportunistic purchase (it is actually the same mechanism as the ThinkPad). Now the floppy (and the ZIP disk, alas) is really dead !

Gwar har! I feel good!

As well you should !

I have a DVD drive on the desktop Mac, but I almost never use it. I would rather watch DVDs on a TV, and I heard of exactly three sources of DVD data discs:

  • Microsoft Developer info
  • Apple Developer info and operating system library
  • Some Linux distributions

Not exactly mainstream stuff.

Some of us live for summoning vortices of dust-laden air.

I would totally wear a bunny suit. Ears, even.

Maybe more goes in on those clean rooms that we suspect.
