Procrastination is the best policy

Last weekend, just as the car just came out of the car wash, the CHECK ENGINE light lit up on the dashboard. According to the owner's manual, I needed take the car in for service. Well, I was just about to call up this morning, and the light went out all by itself.

Next week, we read the children's story The Little Engine That Could, But Just Didn't Feel Like It.

What I'm told is that the "check engine" light just means that the emission-control systems are having trouble. So you may be polluting a bit more than normal, but it doesn't mean the car is about to blow up.

I've also heard that the repair shop can turn this light on by remote control when they're in need of some more cash flow...

Yep, if it flashes, the car's catalytic converter is having major problems. In my case, maybe the car wash managed to get something too wet. Anyway, the last thing we need to spend money on at the moment is more car repairs !

I like to refer to that as the ENGINE ON FIRE light.

Too true
A few days after I wrote that, my engine overheated as I was driving up Route 2 from Alewifre circle, due to low coolant, the 90+ weather, and maybe 150 pounds of sand over the rear axle (for the sandbox). So I had to cool down the car and drive it very carefully over to Stop & Shop, where I bough some coolant. Since then it's been fine.

I would also call it the YOU HAVE TOO MUCH MONEY OR AT LEAST I'M GOING TO GIVE YOU A GOOD SCARE light.

Re: Too true
Good old Alewife Circle, which I like to refer to as THE DOUBLE DONUTS OF DEATH.
