Dodged a Bullet on THAT One (Knock Wood)

Through the magic of FireWire disk mode, I managed to pull all our data and some applications that I didn't feel like tracking down from our iBook. The little guy actually booted this morning, but didn't last very long; then I used the disk mode while connected to our even older G3. Apparently, if you don't ask the disk to do much writing, it's able to stay working longer.

I suppose the problem might not be the disk, but it did tend to make weird noises before it locked up last night. I will ask the upgrade people (probably TechRestore, unless anybody has good local suggestions) to run a quick check on the other parts of the machine just to make sure, but replacing the disk makes sense, if only because it's been four years (and all the OS upgrades have been in-place) and we'd be due anyway.
