GOT ME A MOVIE, I WANT TO YOU KNOW

I watched a fortyish rotund bald man cause thousands of people to chant “Un chien andalusien” at the top of their lungs. It was good.

I missed the Bennies, but got to see Mission of Burma play to an enthusiastic crowd. It's novel for me to beleive that an MoB gig is becoming something of a non-rare thing in this millenium, but they put on a good show and I'm starting to think they're actually more effective in large settings. They also did a new song, "Spider's Web" that combined their classic Stooges-inflected two-chord lurch with occassional falsetto (!) vocals from Roger Miller. Mission of Burma is not through yet.

What to say about the Pixies ? They played a lot of the well-known hits but what's great is there's such depth to their catalog of songs, too, and the middle of the show was devoted to that. The Francis/Kim oddball duets, Kim's rock-bottom bass lines, Joey's slashing or surf guitar, Dave's on-point drumming, the feeling that Francis could EXPLODE at any moment — the Pixies had it, and still do. The closing was pretty cool; the last song of the set was “Gigantic.” during which they indulged in a cute round of Waltons-style “goodnights,” and they encored with “Where Is My Mind ?” which incorporates all the cool spooky and passionate things that make them great.
