The Woodwork Squeaks…

And I actually went out on Tuesday night, to a “mix-tape” night of the Boston Pop Underground, masterminded by marm0t and hosted by the talented and dare I say almost mad Mike Viola. It's all becoming a blur now, but I did get there a little early, so I did some grocery shopping. I've got to rock responsibly, you know.

Oh yeah, so what happened ? Well, the mix-tape night is sort of a freewheeling thing with some short sets by these guys and those guys, and there are covers and other stunts that are a bit looser than you'd normally expect. It's a lot of fun and I think it's great to see musicians play around and turn “faking it” into a good thing. So, as component parts there were:

  • Mike
  • Corin Ashley and Dave Aaronoff, late of the Pills, in an as-of-yet unnamed band
  • Merrie Amsterburg
  • John Powhida of the Rudds (not only is Todd Rundgren one of his heroes but he looks like him !)
  • Francine in a brief and very quiet set – O how I would love to see Clayton flesh out his fabulous songs with a full band on stage
Some highlights: a full-on cover of “Dream Police” (Cheap Trick), Merrie finding her inner Steve Nicks in “Dreams” (Fleetwood Mac), Mike doing an impromptu Suicide cover, and Corin singing a Roy Orbison-esque original that was worth the Man Himself.

I hope that Mike's impending dad-hood doesn't mean an end to this !

As you were.
