Tempest In a Teacup #143493a

Marc Canter posted a picture along with a weblog post that some people found offensive. Here's a summary of the whole thing that I found worthwhile because it asks tough questions about self-censorship, group censorship, and who you're actually writing for.

Some of the players involved also have LiveJournal accounts. But, but... doesn't that make you not part of the blogosphere... ?

What a bunch of self-important crap that was!

OK, I'll delete it since you think so ;)

A lot of the comments are full of hot air, and the original incident is way overblown among players of whom I've got no awe, but the writer is talking about stuff that you see everyday on weblog such as LJ. Maybe if I were of an ornery cuss it would more novel and weak to me...

My thoughts:

The photo incident reminded me an awfully lot of the scene in Spinal Tap about the album cover for 'Smell the Glove'.

I know of some people who objected, on similar grounds, to the whole Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake thing, expressing outrage because it was degrading to women and was, essentially, rape, failing to take into account that such a think was consensually choreographed and JJ CHOSE to participate in such a thing.

The timing of this post, given my latest post, is especially amusing. The subject though- the purpose of blogs, is something with which I have/am obviously wrestling. I hear muttered charges of misogeny blah blah blah which on the one hand I find funny but on the other a bit disturbing and is why I refuse to get involved in politics. People can read whatever into anything, and with me it would not be difficult to take my words and paint the picture of me as a Very Bad Person.

Much like Marc here.

On the plus side, there's always that odd subgroup of women who get their kicks from dating death-row inmates, so in an odd way he may end up with some play from this whole thing. ;)

Let the hate mail commence!
