into battle

Yankees, Sox, Rays, and Other Nonsense

So, tonight's the deciding game of baseball's American League Championship series, and, yeah, I hope the Sox win, although I'm cool with the Rays winning, too. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays have turned things around amazingly since last year, and I'm pretty content with the Sox winning two World Series in three years. I like young teams and underdogs, what can I say ?

It's also true that in the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry, it was probably case that, up until the end of 2007, it was a lot more about Boston fans experiencing anxiety/dread/vitriol/scorn/anger in New York's direction than vice versa. The 2004 ALCS collapse must have struck fear/respect of the Red Sox into Yankees fans, and the early 2008 season underperformance of their team must have given them pause. The Sox/Yankees matchups in 2008 were strangely devoid of the electricity and aggression that we've come to expect. Or maybe I was just thinking along those lines because I'm in Boston, because, lately, the comments in the Replacement Level Yankees Weblog (which I find of great insight into the good and bad of Yankee fandom) have been mostly about the Red Sox postseason games, no matter what the actual blog entry topic was. And so tonight, finally, the tables have turned:

They care more about Us than We care about Them.

The circle is complete !

(Oh, and by the way, if I were a baseball fan outside the the Northeast, I'd be sick of hearing about the Red Sox and Yankees, too…)
