Winsome, losesome

Dinner at Mantra last nite was scrumptious. We thought that, as the Pathetic Suburbanites, we'd be eating all alone at 5:30 on a Monday, but the place was full by six ! Our waiter was the embodiment of the Mantra concept — he looked Hindi, but spoke with a French accent.

Re: Crikey, Guv'nuh, that's some SPICY beef & broccoli.
I'm working with a fellow of Chinese extraction from New Zealand, and his accent is a strange (to me) mixture of Chinese and Aussie/NZ. I'll never forget it !

We 'merkuns are used to thinking of ourselves as the primary nation of immigrants, but Australia, New Zealand, and South America have their own, too. Not to mention the "new Europe," where the Turkish immigrant "guest-workers" who worked at the Mercedes plant in Sindelfingen (near my mom's family's town) in the 70s ended up staying and bought Mercedes of their own. A few years ago we were checking out a day-care place with another couple who were ethnically Japanese, but spoke English with (Brazilian) Portuguese accents.
