What I Like About O

So, on Sunday she was in the kitchen, and I was in the rumpus room, with the TV on VH-1, and they were showing the video for "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On." I wondered aloud who did the original. A few minutes later (and not discussing this burning issue at all), I was in the kitchen too, taking out a garbage bag, and, as my mind tends to wander during errands, I blurted out "Taylor Dayne."

O responded, "No way."

Yep, and the video has the same models as well. Hey, if it worked the first time... ;)

So funny, cause I worked the Robert Palmer record, but my first instinct was to blurt out:

"Cherelle"

then I did a websearch and saw that it was written by R. Palmer, so I guess she covered him. I thought he had covered an R&B record.

eenteresting !
Robert Palmer has done a lot of covers — I was also thinking of Bad Case of Loving You," written by Moon Martin. Check out these other covers and the late 70s-to-80s photos.

I guess if we both thought "Turn You On" was a cover, Mr. Palmer is indeed a master of blue-eyed soul !

robert palmer didn't write it. according to allmusic.com (the only music site i trust) it was written by harris/lewis, better known as jimmy jam and terry lewis, aka the brains behind janet jackson and a million other pop records.

i do believe the cherelle version came first, followed by the palmer one a year later.

robert palmer liked to take black techno-dance records and turn them into his own covers. check out his version of "you are in my system", originally done by (who else) The System. the guys behind the system actually co-produced the Palmer version of "You Are In My System" so his version sounds very close to the original. it's an interesting comparison.

speaking of You Are In My System, i just have to add that (a) i freakin love that song no matter who does it and (b) there's an amazing cover of it by uwe schmidt (aka atom heart aka senor coconut) on the lb album "pop artificielle". in fact "pop artificielle" is an amazing album of amazing cover versions. you have to hear his take on "ashes to ashes" (bowie). it's just... wow.

yeah, that really was my first impression. and when i searched the stupid internet, i found some webpage that gave him writer credit. only when i came home and actually looked at a 45 was i able to confirm that jam and lewis had written it. i knew cherelle came first. damn me for second guessing myself.

and jsd, thanks for the tip on uwe schmidt. i clicked and purchased.

Yeah, I love "You Are In My System."

I checked out the track listing Pop Artificielle, and noticed it has a cover of "Thatness and Thereness" by Ryuichi Sakamoto (off B-2 Unit). Hmm....
