A Spring Evening

This evening I saw a Baltimore Oriole in the apple tree of our neighbor's backyard, for the first time this spring. Maybe it's the same one that nested in the tree in our backyard last year.

The frogs are peeping again. I would love to record the sound, but I don't have a suitable device (I don't feel like lugging a computer outside, though I suppose I could do that). What would be cool is something like a minidisc recorder with mic-in capability…

i just got an archos jukebox recorder. it's like an iPod but it can record - mic in, line in & digital in. very nifty. oh and plus a clever group of hackers have written an open source operating system that replaces the (kind of mediocre) default one.

As it turns out, the iPod can record, but Apple's software doesn't support it. Frankly, if I was playing back things more than recording them, I'd vastly prefer the iPod over any of its competitors.

Also, I'd like to be able to do this for around $100. (I used to have a Walkman Pro, but it's long since died.) It's not clear which of the cheap MiniDisc recorders actually have analog in.

Of course, if you are serious about fielding recordings, the cost of a good parabolic mirror (and microphone !) will dwarf the price of the electronics they're attached to...
