How it's done

A few months ago I saw a gig with Keith Fullerton Whitman (a/k/a Hrvatski) in Jamaica Plain, making strange noises with a guitar and his PowerBook. I caught on glimpse of what he was doing on the computer, and apparently all he was doing was mousing around, occasionally clicking on boxes of different colors. Well, I think was he was using was Max/MSP – I've heard about it before, and it's in the (Mac) news because they've just announced a version for OS X. It's pretty wild; it's not really a music program but more of a generalized programmable media controller.

when i worked at opcode we had the license for Max in the US. i actually edited some of the Max manual. i didn't understand any of it then though. i barely do now. it's actually a visual object-oriented programming language optimized for MIDI (and now with MSP, audio). very very ahead of its time. it was developed at ircam. those guys are just wacky. see also metasynth.

Not forgotten at all !
I've actually seen the man live here in Boston. Of course, there were about five people in the audience, I think.

The new album (the one I was listening to) is very good. My friend runs an unofficial web site:

and there's an associated mailing list, which is pretty low traffic.

Re: Not forgotten at all !
Thanks for the link!

I obviously don´t know the Durutti Column that well, had no idea he made that many albums. I remember "way back" being a tormented teenager listening to bands like Cure, Siouxsie, killing joke [to name but a few] I had the album Another setting that I liked tremendously.

Browsing through your journal it strikes me that we seem to share the same interest in music.

After seeing the movie 24 hour party people [which was so and so] an audience of five seemed huge compared to the audiences he had back in britain. *hehe*
