Free Ride

Neato. I’m typing this on my iBook in the Au Bon Pain at Hayward and Main in Kendall Square, and I’ve got net access. This is the first time I’ve gone out in the wild this thing. I’m picking up networks named MIT, tupile, 250761 (how evocative), jfcog, and CRL-RED2000, and am using the last one. I tried MIT first and I was connected, but it didn’t give me a network address, go figure.

cool! i am so glad i saw your iBook at your bday party - that's what convinced me to get one!

i only have dialup at my new place...and it seems the modem on my iMac G3 is DEAD! i can connect w/ my iBook but not my iMac. i've changed the modem configuration 4,589 times and nothing works. @#$&!

Gah !
Damn, I hate modems.

Does the iMac think it's getting a dialtone or is it failing before that ?

If worst comes to worst you can running Internet Sharing on the iBook and just connect your two Macs with an Ethernet cable. OR you could find a Airport Base Station with a modem (I bet the used ones are getting cheaper now, since Airport Extreme is on the way) and connect the iMac to the Ethernet port of that. Add an Airport card to your iBook to justify the whole thing and you'll be truly wired:

Re: Gah !
actually, it dials and seemingly connects, but instead of actually connecting, it just fails...it would probably be cheaper to buy an airport then to pay for a new modem and to have it installed!

(& it is the perfect excuse to get one!)

i am going to call Eartlink later...i usually call them b/c they actually have really good Apple tech support (for free!).
