I like the "1995" tag.

You wouldn't happen to be able to consolidate the reasons why anti-Windows programmers hate Windows into a neat little nutshell, would you? I want to know, but don't want to comb the USENET archives.

Yes, 1995 is about the height of Windows-osity, isn't it ?

I really don't hate Windows. While a lot of my peers (especially when I was working at Lotus) scorned Microsoft, I thought it was OK… just different. From a programmer's point of view, it really did seem like Microsoft was going to take over the world by being just good enough. And that's probably the worst indictment an idealist can make, that its mere competency was going to crush diversity and innovation in software. Frankly, a lot of the technical criticisms of Windows are more about not liking its style than it being broken. (Mostly I have Window NT and after in mind, since the DOS-based versions of Windows were pretty rickety.) So the word “friend” in the headline is about 30% non-ironic, I'd say.

On the other hand, I'm pretty gratified at what's happened since 1995. The web rendered the promise of “Cairo” (a lot of nifty distributed object stuff, had it ever worked, ahem) moot, and the software ecosystem is a lot more interesting these days.

Meanwhile, I'm enjoying the icicles forming in Hell.
