This Year's Model (1978, 1994, 2002, ????)

Universal Music Enterprises Acquires Early Elvis Costello Catalog; Plans Include Reissues, Deluxe Editions, Compilations, Box Sets and More:

SANTA MONICA, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- August 02, 2006 -- Universal Music Enterprises (UMe), the U.S. catalog and special markets entity for Universal Music Group, the world's largest music company and market share leader, has reached an agreement to acquire the first 11 original albums (1977-1986) in the catalog of Elvis Costello, one of the most influential, acclaimed and enduring artists of modern rock.

Question: exactly from whom or what did Universal acquire the catalog ? Rhino ? Jake Rivera ? Elvis Himself ?

who got it from Rykodisc, and why?

Bowie bought his backcatalogue from Ryko, and that makes sense.. so i don't understand......

I think Bowie actually owns his own stuff, he just licenses it out (to Virgin/EMI, for example). So does Kate Bush.

OK, I just checked a few of my Rhino reissues – they were licensed from the man himself. However, I also also see that Imperial Bedroom was licensed from Riviera Global Productions.

I find it hard to beleive that EC would actually sell his back catalog…

Rhino dragged out a lot of demos – the bottom of the barrel, figuratively speaking, was being approached. Some gems, some things where Elvis' sense of quality control was spot-on.

Now that I know about this, I'm going to hold off on the one 80s album that I still haven't bought in remastered, which is Punch The Clock

Clever signoff there, girl !

I hear ya. When Other Music's weekly newsletter is about half reissues, maybe it's time to cut back a little.
