Hey, Someone Was Paying Attention !

Oh, goodie. Half.com is not going away. A few years after eBay acquired them, they've been threatening/promising to meld Half.com's model into eBay, but there would have been no way to sell an item at fixed price while listing it indefinitely. A lot of people, like me, are in no big hurry to get rid of the kinds of things you can list on Half.com (mostly media like books, CDs, and videos), and all the things that would make an eBay listing more like a fixed-price listing would have cost extra.

As it turns out, even with the announced for phase-out (it would have been in October), people were buying and selling on Half.com more than ever. I'm just glad eBay finally noticed it.

Doesn't Amazon offer essentially the same service should half.com go the great domain in the sky?

Yeah, I guess I'd just have to move everything over in that case (which will proboably never happen now). Have you ever tried selling through Amazon ?

No, but I've bought things through Amazon that way, and I did so thinking that the vendors so listed were like respectable companies, rather than someone selling stuff out of his basement. As it turns out, it's just like half.com, but perhaps Amazon's business in this respect does better because it banks on that misperception.

Hey, I sell things out of my basement !

The funny thing is a lot of "real" stores sell through half.com as well, like Disc Diggers in Davis Square.

Hey, it's okay that people sell things out of their basements! Especially with all the buyer-feedback tools that Amazon and Ebay provide. It's just that somehow buying something from Amazon seems a little more comfortable and less risky than buying something through ebay, even when it really amounts to just the same.
