The Freedom Tower Has A Font

The New York Times devotes an article to the choice of font used for the inscription in the foundation block for the new Freedom Tower that is to rise on the site of the World Trade Center. Hoefler Gotham, especially in its capitals, is inspired by the admirably non-nonsense lettering found on mid-20th century buildings in the city.

You can even try it out for yourself:

Hoefler also made the elegant Hoefler Text font for Apple's QuickDraw GX in the 90s; it's a pretty amazing piece of work that evokes classic book fonts while showing off the typographic capabilities of Apple's type support.

To my untrained eye, the uppercase looks like Helvetica. Not that there's anything wrong with Helvetica. If you're into proportional fonts and all that...

I've got the above book. But will admit a certain predilection to Lucida Console no less.

Link should have been http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/3907044878

Someday I'll learn that Windows doesn't copy to the clipboard when you highlight. Extra step involved.

Hey, I like Lucida Console – it's one of my top three fixed-width fonts, the others being Monaco and Andale Mono.

At small point sizes, everything starts looking like Helvetica. Plus the lowercase of Gotham is rather Helvetica-like.

The "R" in Gotham is what sets it apart from a lot of other modern fonts – the top lobe is just a little too big to be canonical, as it is in Helvetica.

I don't know people pick on Helvetica, by the way – it's very clean and classic. Maybe it's because it really shines at higher resolutions, while looking kind of bland on computer screens.
