Ogg !
In the name of technological purity (MPEG is encumbered by patents even though everyone has a player for it), the LJ folks went for Ogg instead. This is why, I suspect, almost nobody even listens to phone posts.

To get Quicktime to play Ogg files, you can use the Ogg component for Quicktime as documented here:

http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=184 (scroll down a bit)

but Safari still won't know what to do with it – you'll have to right click on the downloaded file and do "Open With…" and choose the Quicktime Player.

Another possibility is to use Video LAN Client, which is a pretty nifty free application which, among other things, allows you to play DVDs and take screen captures of them (Apple's DVD player doesn't allow this).
